Welcome to Eremito

Eremito opened in 2013 as a contemporary, secular hermitage, in a stone ruin in the woods rebuilt on its original footprint. It is a member of Design Hotels (Marriott Bonvoy).

The 18 Celluzze, modelled on monks' cells, are priced for one guest: solo travellers pay no supplement, and a second guest pays a reduced rate. Most measure 9 m², with a 120 cm bed and a stone desk, facing the rose garden or the valley. The 4 Priore measure 18 m², with a king bed.

The rate covers full vegetarian board and the steam bath and jacuzzi. Dinner is shared by candlelight, in silence, to Gregorian chant. Breakfast and lunch are informal. Yoga, readings in the chapel and walks in the woods are all optional.

The hermitage stands in the woods of the Monte Peglia UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, north of Orvieto, halfway between Rome and Florence. Its 40 hectares of woodland have walking trails.

Why it's a Positive Escape

A hermitage for solo travellers in the Umbrian woods, rebuilt from a stone ruin, where dinner is eaten in silence.

Energy

  • Three quarters renewable energy

75% of the 181 MWh used in 2025 came from renewable sources, the hotel reports, with solar panels, batteries, solar water heaters and a sun-tracking solar concentrator on site

  • 100% renewable electricity

on-site solar, topped up with certified renewable electricity bought from the grid

  • Energy class A4

the top Italian energy rating, with insulation and underfloor heating and cooling instead of air conditioning

Water

  • Rainwater for the garden

collected in a cistern. Wastewater is treated on site

  • Filtered drinking water

a reverse-osmosis system replaces bottled water

Food

  • A vegetarian kitchen

for guests and staff. 35% of the food served in 2025 was grown on site, the hotel reports

Community

  • Local suppliers

at least 70% of purchases come from within 20 km, the hotel reports

Waste

  • Organic waste composted on site

and returned to the vegetable garden. The hotel estimates that 83.5% of its 2025 waste stayed out of landfill

  • Refillable toiletries and cleaning products

    organic and biodegradable

Materials & Construction

  • Rebuilt with its own stones

taken down and rebuilt on its original footprint

Transport

  • Charging points for electric cars

at the car park and the hermitage, on renewable electricity

Transparency

  • Certified B Corp

assessed by B Lab against its social and environmental standards, recertified in 2026
