Welcome to CERVO Mountain Resort

Daniel F. and Seraina Lauber founded CERVO in 2009. Its seven chalets stand on the slope above Zermatt, at the foot of a ski run, and its 54 rooms and suites come in three styles. Nomad is a base for active travellers, and some of its rooms sleep 4 with bunk beds. Alpinist and Huntsman are rated 5 stars. The resort is certified ibex fairstay Platinum and Swisstainable Level III, and is a member of Design Hotels.

Rooms start at 22 m². The Nomad Roof Apartment (120 m², 3 bedrooms) sleeps up to 6, and the Huntsman Lodge combines several suites into 4 to 6 bedrooms, with 263 to 371 m².

The Ātman Mountain Spa has an outdoor onsen, a natural cold pool used for ice bathing, a Finnish sauna, a steam room, a Bhutanese hot-stone bath and two Mongolian yurts. Bazaar, one of the restaurants, serves largely vegetarian North African and Middle Eastern food.

The resort sits just above the centre of car-free Zermatt, next to the valley station of the Sunnegga funicular, in the Zermatt–Matterhorn ski area. In winter the runs end at the door, and in summer hiking and bike trails start from it.

Good to know

  • The rooms are spread across several chalets, so reaching breakfast or the spa can mean stepping outside.

  • Dogs are welcome for a fee.

Why it's a Positive Escape

A ski-in, ski-out resort above car-free Zermatt that swapped heating oil for geothermal heat pumps and works with producers from the valley.

Energy

  • Heating oil replaced by geothermal heat pumps

until 2020 the main house was heated with oil. Geothermal heat pumps and heat recovered from wastewater and from refrigeration units now supply 99% of the resort's heat, the onsen included, and natural gas the remaining 1%

  • 53.1 tonnes of CO2 saved a year

the resort's own figure for the switch away from heating oil

Water

  • Filtered village water instead of bottles

all the drinking water sold comes from the village and is filtered

  • 10% of water earnings to Water is Right

a foundation working for access to clean drinking water and sanitation worldwide

  • A cold pool cleaned without chemicals

the spa's natural pool recycles its bathing water without any chemical treatment

Food

  • Suppliers within 150 km as a rule

for the kitchen, equipment and services. They include the Biner family for honey and the Horu cheese dairy in Zermatt, and Naturabeef by Edgar Imhoff in Raron

  • Organic at Madre Nostra

meat and fish are organic, and the homemade pasta uses 100% organic wheat

  • Bees on site

three colonies since June 2022, looked after by a Zermatt beekeeper

Waste

  • Candle wax turned into fire lighters

old wax goes to Atelier Manus, a sheltered workshop in Brig, and comes back as fire lighters for the chalets and restaurants. 33 kg in winter 2024/25

  • Reusable containers and second-life corks

the Horu dairy delivers by electric car or bike in reusable containers, and wine corks go to kindergartens and social organisations

Community

  • CHF 1 (~$1.20) per dish for Education for All Morocco

on every mezze or lamb tajine sold at Bazaar. The charity helps girls in the High Atlas mountains get an education. Over 1,700 dishes in winter 2024/25

  • Village life in Zermatt

a monthly soup table, a regular vegetable market and a yearly Sustainability Day, all run by the resort

Transparency

  • ibex fairstay Platinum

a Swiss sustainability certification for hotels, awarded after an audit by independent auditors across management, ecology, regional ties, social balance and finances. CERVO holds the Platinum level for the second time in a row

  • Swisstainable Level III

the top level of Switzerland Tourism's sustainability programme, which requires an externally audited certification
